Memorial Day

Amidst the barbecues and shopping on this holiday, our humans would do well to truly take time remember what the purpose of Memorial Day is - to honor the over 1 million members of the US Armed Forces who have died in service of their country.     That is a big number, kittehs.   One million +

Mom went to Wikipedia to read a little about Memorial Day and found this out about our flag that she did not know (don't mind her, she is a bit slow):

"On Memorial Day the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all"

Now because our flag hangs on the side of the house with the flagpole at an angle, we don't quite know how to accomplish this, but we are gonna scratch our heads and think about a plan.

  9. I didn't know that. I think there are far too many people who have old torn flag or let them hit the ground who don't know that that is disrespectful. Thanks for remembering on this Memorial Day.

  12. Happy Memorial Day! We hope you had a great weekend. You are lucky, our mom doesn't put out a flag any more. It was so old it was retired and she's never gotten a new one.

Isn't Google annoying sometimes! Our mom especially loves Google Images. You type in something, say, girls in pink, and all kinds of stuff comes up. Guys, lizards, spitballs, you name it!

  13. Very interesting! We found out this weekend that African-Americans originally celebrated Decoration Day, which became Memorial Day, to remember those who helped free them from slavery.

  15. Thank you for sharing this, Simba. Our mom didn't know this about the flag, either. We are thankful for all of the men and women who serve our country and all of those who have died in service. Their sacrifices have made our freedom possible, and that is truly a blessing!
