Still here

No electricity yet at our house. We are hunkered down for the long haul.

Here I am looking out the front door on Sunday morning. Most of the snow has melted now - there really wasn't that much. However the snow clung to the leaves and was too heavy for lots of the branches, so many of them broke. In the middle of this picture you can see our young flowering Kwanzaan cherry tree - its branches usually reach up to the sky, but the weight of the snow on them brought them all the way to the ground. Luckily they are young and flexible so none of those branches broke.

At the beginning of the snowstorm, Mom took this picture of our impatiens on the deck buried in snow. She thought it was rather pretty. That poor window box was smashed by a tree limb that came crashing down on that part of the deck railing, so it just looks like moosh now.

Added to answer a few of the comments: The deck railing held up fine. Dad built it super strong.
We don't expect power till near the end of the week.
No generator (Mom would be scared of one by herself, but wishes Dad was here and that we had one. But Dad says we would need special electrical work to have a generator connected to our heating system, which is gas, but needs electricity for the water pump).
Dad is away on a trip till next week.

  1. Wow, still no power? But you have a wood stove or generator, we hope!

Paws crossed electricity is restored soon. It's amazing how much we rely on a resource that we haven't had very long at all, in the grand scheme of our human history.

  4. We hope you get power soon so you can stay warm! It's too bad all those branches broke and we hope there isn't any damage to your deck from them falling on it too. Take care! We're sending purrs!

  6. OH dear we are so sorry to hear you are doing this by yourself with your husband. WE know that it must be very challenging. For hurricane preparedness we have two generators, but if I had to try to make them work on my own I would not have enough strength in my upper body to do so. So I do understand what you mean. WE will keep you continually in our purrs.

  9. I hope your power is back soon. What a brutal event that was, so much destruction. Several young trees in back yard bent to the ground and then broke, and many big maple branches fell. Like yours, cherry tree held up after bending to the sidewalk - good tough little trees they are! May we never have such an ugly event like this again!!!

  11. omg you poor thing!

I was watching the news tonight and they were saying how it is unbelievable that in this day and age you would be without power this long.

I guess part of the problem is that there are even wires in the AIR and the electric companies can't get around things like trees etc. to fix them.

I feel so bad for you!

  12. Hi Simba & Audrey,

Oh dear, hoped you would be powered by now. We're in Beantown and in and around the city things are pretty close to normal. Still powerless in some burbs--brother there does have a generator. Hope you have good blankies and quilts and are keeping your mom warm.

  14. Oh my goodness, I don't know how I missed your post yesterday! We hope you get power back soon, of course. And we'll be hoping for all your trees and plants and stuff, too. I think the earliest my mom ever saw snow was October 10, but nothing like what you got. Some surprise, eh?

  20. Oh Simba and Audrey and Mom. My Mom and I have never been without power that long. Maybe 24 hours in the winter. I am just so so sorry that is stil going on.

I hope and pray that the power will be restored quickly, Can tou stay with anyone while this is happening to get some relief..even a hotel?

I know what you mean about generators. Where I was working, all of the buildings had their own for emergencies and they were huge. NO way could I ever start one and they need to be tested at least once every month or so to make sure they're working correctly.

    Take good care you three.
